our story
When Kevin Mount and Peter Wright met in their freshman year at Berklee College, they didn’t know they were at the beginning of something special. All each other knew was that they had a pretty cool roommate who had the same passion for music. As it happened, things developed from there.
As time went by, the two of them realized just how much they could accomplish if they put their minds together, and pretty soon, they were writing songs for local talent. Each provided a unique sense of balance for the other which allows them to work together to this day, as Founders of Union Music Licensing.
Always willing to give local artists a helping hand, Kevin Mount and Peter Wright found their first real break when they were approached by Zumba Fitness with an interesting issue, one as old as time itself: choosing between popular, but expensive established artists or taking a chance of lesser-known, emerging ones.
Zumba, as it turned out, had been going for the former, licensing music for major acts such as Pitbull. The only trouble was, big acts tend to expect an equally big pay when their songs get licensed, which can cause real issues in the long-term.
Kevin Mount and Peter Wright, never ones to be phased by a challenge, quickly came up with an innovative solution: why not trade big artists for cheaper, local ones?
They put Zumba Fitness in contact with a young up-and-coming Colombian artist by the name of Mara, and the Zumba students just went crazy for her. Within one short month, Zumba no longer had problems with licensing music because they knew they could turn to local talent, and Mara’s career was soaring (scoring millions of views).
Pleased with the work they’d accomplished, the two students decided to call it a day and after college, went their separate ways. Each got to work with famed, highly skilled musicians and songwriters for big brands, yet both felt something was missing.
Both Kevin Mount and Peter Wright were constantly coming into contact with artists of all types and of various levels of fame struggling to earn an honest buck. Seeing how volatile the music industry was and how difficult it was to monetize your work if you weren’t “it” that particular month, Kevin Mount and Peter Wright remembered their college experience with Zumba Fitness.
The two thought to themselves, there must be thousands of agencies and brands that lack the funds to license music from the hottest artists. So why not find a middle ground?
They started working together to find a way in which artists were paid fairly, in which the agencies could get quality music without breaking the bank. And that was how Union Music Licensing came to be – a place for artists and brands to connect.
Union Music Licensing was the perfect answer to an industry that was desperate for diversity and opportunity, and it continues to bridge the gap between brands and emerging artists to this day.
